“A Winter’s Walk” (Hocking Hills Region, Ohio; Part 2)

Trail view; Old Man's Cave; Hocking Hills Region; Oho
My sister’s current tag line for virtually all text messages is “I can’t wait ‘til SPRING!” I know; I know… We’ve been well-wintered this year and have the damp piles of snow pants in our laundry rooms to prove it. Over-sized mugs leave the dishwasher only to be refilled with steaming hot chocolate or cider. Sleds and shovels lean at-the-ready against a garage wall, never quite making it back into their storage spaces. [Read more →]

Snow and Ice? Nice… (Hocking Hills Region, Ohio; Part 1)

Close-up on icicles; Old Man's Cave; Hocking Hills Region; Ohio

Hibernation is not a real option for most mammals, although many attempt it in one form or another as a “winter dodge”. Cooking endless pots of chicken soup and making serious indentations in the TV sofa, many wait for the weatherman’s OK to venture out for much more than work and essential errands. “It’s not the cold; it’s the lack of daylight!” -a frozen variation on Ohio’s summertime conversation staple: “It’s not the heat; it’s the humidity!”

Matt and snow friend; 2005?

But if you huddle indoors to wait for spring, the chill still does its glacial creep up your front walkway… It seems more effective to simply add the extra layers of clothing and head outside to face winter’s blast (even if it does take an extra ten minutes by February because half the winter wear has been borrowed, lost, or is stylishly displayed on the front-yard snowman, and some of us still prefer the dignity of matched gloves).

Highbanks Metro Park, Columbus Ohio, Ice Jungle

I idled in some “oh no, it snowed” traffic this morning, calculating the whole while how much faster I could have covered my route on foot. Tempting… There is something so renewing about running through fresh white stuff. When you’re intently focused on maintaining an upright position, the trail tends to end sooner than expected or desired. [Read more →]

“In-Town Tourist”: Highbanks Metro Park

Highbanks Metro Park, Columbus Ohio, November evening 2007

I’m headed to run through my favorite park in a few minutes. Now, I can be slightly fickle on “favorites”; I have three “favorite” children, for instance. And my “favorite” trip is usually the one I’m dreaming of, packing for or traveling through.
But I really like Highbanks Metro Park[Read more →]

‘Tis the season…

Carolling at Highbanks 2006, Matt and Grandma Dugan

Matt, my little math whiz, has been giving me a daily “count-down” to Christmas since sometime in early November. That was just last week; right? This is one of those years that I’ve had to boil it down to the basics, focusing on a handful of meaningful traditions rather than a “mall full” of activity. [Read more →]
