Excerpts

Fiction:

"The Walmart Special"

...After what I term the “Walmart incident”, it seemed appropriate to take practical measures toward meeting dating candidates. And when my sister Katie started picking out guys on Yahoo’s match site one night, I decided I’d do better making my own selections.  Not that she has bad taste; Katie just thinks that I’m younger and wilder than I really am.  A little projection on her part, I think.

"Travel vs Your Fitness Routine" (Her Fitness Hut; June 16, 2009)

The gym is unfamiliar or even non-existent. -Or maybe you’re in a different time zone, struggling against your own body clock.  Whatever the particulars, travel presents unique challenges for the fitness-minded.  More positively however, it can also gift you with some new opportunities to energize and enhance a humdrum routine.

"I Was a Gym Class Wallflower" (My Fitness Hut; September 3, 2009)

I was a gym class wallflower.

It’s true.  Pressed against the cafeteria wall, hoping to camouflage my lack of athletic experience and skill as blasé disinterest –that was me.  This surprises all those who missed my mandatory sixth grade gymnastics routine –heavy on dramatic spins and arm flourishes that did little to hide the fact that my abilities were limited to somersaults, ballet-style cartwheels and half of a back walk-over (as I recall it, half of my three minute routine was spent ineffectively attempting to kick my way back out of a backbend… riveting humiliation when viewed on a TV monitor outside the cafeteria during the high traffic lunch hour!).

"Dream Job Requires Sharp Focus" (Ezine Magazine, October 2, 2007)

Sounds kind of like a dream job, doesn’t it? Getting paid to simply read aloud; to talk... And, we’re not even referring to the most dreaded of all (for many) “public speaking” format. Voice-over artists usually speak in an empty, sound-baffled room. So… how is it that one “good” voice resonates above the rest?

"Moms on Monkey Bars" (Reprinted by Her Fitness Hut; December 18, 2008)

Over the past three days or so, I’ve gained a better understanding of why women of my age (the specifics of which is an irrelevant detail) lose track of their gym passes and the will to fight the good fight on personal fitness.
